"AT THE ROCKET”

VFW Post 4534

10.4.2021

Greetings Rocket Post,

Happy Monday everyone; we have another fantastic week in the books. I have to tell you all that last Wednesday the Liver and Onion Dinner was a huge hit. I heard people still taking about it this weekend. This was a great job by every one of you that volunteered and helped Carl, huge success. Since everyone seemed to enjoy that, Carl has added another special dinner to the Calendar; on 27 October, which is a Wednesday, we are having Chicken Fried Steak Dinner. Yes, the White pepper Gravy! Look for that sign-up sheet in the canteen soon.

Back in 1899 on 29 September a group of 13 Spanish-American war veterans joined together to form what would become the nation’s largest and most dedicated group of combat veterans. The original name for this group was "The American Veterans of Foreign Service”. How this organization differed from other fraternal societies was they opened their membership to all branches from all foreign wars. Now here we are 122 years later and the membership is now 1.5 million members. As the nation’s oldest combat veteran service organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has been unwavering in its devotion "to honor the dead by helping the living.”

I am sure you have all heard of the Humane society and you know they take care of a lot of dogs, cats and other animals. Our Auxiliary is trying to support them and I am relaying this to all of you. There is a box in the canteen for your donations. This can be dog food, cat food, dry food, canned food, whatever your heart desires. Keep in mind they also have other animals there from birds, rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamster’s. You can also look at their wish list on line at https://brevardhumanesociety.org/wish-lists/   If you have any questions please contact the Auxiliary President Diana Collier

I know you have all been waiting for our next Post clean-up so here it is. On Saturday 16 October at 8:00 AM we will have four goals in mind. First we will need two volunteers to help Scooter in the hall. This will be moving everything out and then stripping and waxing the floor to a high shine. We will need volunteers in the kitchen for a deep cleaning and we will need volunteers outside cleaning the three refrigerators inside and out, the grill will be detailed by George. We will cover the property for anything that does not belong on the ground and put it in the trash and time permitting, we will pressure wash the fence around the dumpster. As you all know, that have helped in the past, this sounds like a lot but truthfully the more volunteers we have the less time it will take. I will also add that we always have a great time doing this and it makes our post look so much better. Hope to see you all there and if you have any outdoor tools or cleaning supplies that you think would be helpful please bring them.

Remember on 16 October we have the Show men the Money at 1:00 PM and upon its completion the Rocket Post will be closing for Volunteer appreciation day. So there will not be pool that evening as the commander wants to thank all of the volunteers by giving them all a day off. For the Volunteers at the Rocket Post, please sign up on the sheet in the canteen so Dennis has a good headcount of who to expect.

If you love animals you’re in for a real treat on 17 October at the USSSA Space Coast Complex 5800 Stadium Parkway, Viera, FL 32940. The Space Coast Police K-9 competition will have Americas Top Dogs competing on a K-9 obstacle course, hard dog/fast dog competition and there will be a law enforcement and vendor expo. All proceeds benefit the Space Coast Police K-9 foundation.

On Saturday 23 October we will be showing our appreciation for all our First responders here in Brevard County. We will have a DJ outside and we will have the grill on and the kitchen open from 1 to 5 PM. Please bring sides to share. There should be a sign-up sheet in the canteen or contact Diana Collier or Carl Davis if you would like to bring a side dish.

On Wednesday 27 October 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM we have the Chicken Fried Steak Dinner. Be sure to sign up in the canteen.

On 29 October we are having our Commanders Choice Dinner. This will be something very unique and I for one can’t wait to try it. Our kitchen volunteers are makinga Cornish Hen dinner with dressing, mashed potatoes w/gravy, veg, salad, roll and dessert. Not only does this sound like a lot of work, it sounds like a lot of food and for only 12 bucks you cannot go wrong. If you wish only a 1/2 Cornish Hen the price is only $10.00. This is going to be awesome.

Following the commanders Choice Dinner we are helping out the Veterans Memorial with a karaoke contest in the hall. I know we have a few singers in our membership and I hope to see you up there going for that first prize that night. This should be a lot of fun and I expect more than average participation this night.
