"AT THE ROCKET”
VFW Post 4534
Good Day Everyone,
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day prior to 1971, commemorates all of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving this great country. A lot of people question what we should do on such a holiday. Opinions vary as far as if you should have a cookout, picnic or place flags at the local cemetery and remember those that have died by attending ceremonies. I think this should be a personal choice. Those that have defended the United States deserve to be remembered and respected but how one person remembers and respects might not be the same for the next person or family. For this writer, I will place Flags on the morning of 25 May at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery (CCNC) and then on Monday I will be back at the CCNC to attend their Memorial Day Observance at 11:30 AM. After that ceremony I will go straight to the VFW Post 4534 for our ceremony at 1:00 PM (1300Hrs.). This is all a personal choice. If you choose to sit in silence and remember your loved ones and friends that is 100% your right, if you choose to have a cookout and celebrate the lives of lost brothers and sisters, again, this is 100% your right. My only hope is that all men and women who have died for our freedoms are remembered, respected and never forgotten.
We do not talk enough! Last night I had members asking about our Memorial Day ceremony on Monday the 27th. I told them it would be at 1:00 PM and asked them to bring a side dish to share with the Chicken. They say they had heard nothing about it. This is on all of us. Let’s spread the word about what’s going on at the Rocket Post. There are a quite a few members that do not get on the web page or on our Facebook page, keep each other up to date on what’s going on.
When you see Digger and Mr. Lomax, be sure to thank them yet again. We have been getting estimates for a gutter between the main building and the Screen room and the prices have been outrageous. Mike and Digger went above and beyond and did it themselves and I have to tell you, it looks fantastic. I’m actually looking forward to a good rain so we can see how well it works. Thank you both very much for all you do on a daily basis around the Post.
We are trying something new on the 4thWednesday of the month. We are going to try "GAME NIGHT” it is exactly how it sounds. This could be cards, Left Right Center, Chutes and Ladders, Checkers, Chess, you name it, and it could be anything you want. Keep your eyes open for updates and plan on enjoying the 4th Wednesday with us.
