From the Commander

Greetings Rocket Post, I hope and trust everyone is doing well. This past week on Thursday, August 7th, we recognized National Purple Heart Day. This is to honor the brave men and women who are wounded or killed while serving our nation. This award is not for bravery or heroism, but for sacrifice.  It is a United States Military decoration awarded in the name of the President and has been observed since on or after April 5th, 1917. It was originally designated as the Badge of Military Merit and established by George Washington, then the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, by order from his Newburgh, New York headquarters on August 7th, 1782. In the early 20thcentury, General Douglas McArthur, confidentially reopened work on a new design involving the Washington Commission of Fine Arts. The redesigned newly revived medal became known as the Purple Heart. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located in New Windsor, New York.

To the members of our Post who have been awarded this medal, we as fellow comrades in arms say thank you for your sacrifice in service to our great nation. As we continue to deal with living in this age of Covid 19, I hope all of you remember that we are here for you, our veterans. We may not be open as much as we were before, but we are still here for you. If anyone has a need or knows a veteran or family member of a veteran in need, please let us know so we can be of service to you. Stay safe and I hope to see you soon.

                                                                        Respectfully,

                                                                        Mark R. Kelley
